Ian joined the stockbroking firm of J. M. Finn in 1968 after receiving a degree in Business Management and subsequently became P.A. to the Senior Partner. In 1976 he joined Wood MacKenzie as a specialist in consumer non-durable stocks and where, in 1978, he established and managed the first U.K. index-matched pension fund. He became a partner at Wood MacKenzie in 1981, before moving to Salomon Brothers in 1989 as head of U.K. Equity Sales market-making.
In 1992 he moved to Smith NewCourt and headed up Equity Capital Markets. After its takeover by Merrill Lynch in 1995 he became a Managing Director in Corporate Broking. Ian retired from Merrill Lynch in May, 1999, and has acted as a consultant to listed companies. He has served as an advisor to students at the London Business School as well as a fundraiser and non-executive director of an Internet movie company and consultant to an investor relations firm.
